Area Code 919 – Tongchuan, Shaanxi

Overview of Area Code +86 919

Area code 919 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to Tongchuan (铜川), a prefecture-level city in the central part of Shaanxi Province, China. Under the ITU-T E.164 international numbering plan, the full country calling code for China is +86, so numbers in Tongchuan are dialed internationally as +86 919 XXX XXXX (where the subscriber number is typically 7 digits, making the total national significant number 10 digits).

Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Tongchuan is a relatively small but historically significant city located in the Guanzhong Plain, approximately 70 kilometers north of Xi’an, the provincial capital. The area code 919 serves the entire administrative region of Tongchuan, including its three districts: Wangyi District (王益区), Yintai District (印台区), and Yaozhou District (耀州区), as well as the New District (新区), which is a development zone. The code covers both urban and rural areas within the city’s jurisdiction.

Dialing Formats

• Local dialing (within Tongchuan): For calls to another fixed-line number in the same area, subscribers typically dial only the 7-digit subscriber number (e.g., 1234567). However, due to the expansion of mobile and VoIP services, some local calls may require the full 10-digit number including the area code, especially when calling from mobile phones.
• Domestic long-distance (from other parts of China): Dial 0919 followed by the 7-digit subscriber number (e.g., 0919 1234567). The leading 0 is the domestic trunk prefix.
• International calls (from outside China): Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 in most countries) followed by 86, then 919, and the 7-digit subscriber number (e.g., +86 919 1234567).

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T and MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) updates, area code 919 does not have an overlay code. Tongchuan is one of the smaller cities in Shaanxi, and its numbering capacity is sufficient for its population. However, with the ongoing integration of telecommunications networks and the growth of digital services, it is essential to verify the current dialing procedures with your local service provider, as China has been gradually implementing number portability and unified numbering plans.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers: If you are within Tongchuan and dialing a fixed-line number, you may only need to dial the 7-digit subscriber number. If you are unsure, dialing the full 10-digit number (0919 + subscriber number) is generally safe and will connect.
• Domestic callers from other cities: Always include the area code 0919. Do not omit the leading 0 when dialing from within China.
• International callers: Replace the leading 0 with the country code 86 and add the international access prefix of your country. For example, from the US, dial 011 86 919 1234567; from the UK, dial 00 86 919 1234567.

Understanding the correct dialing format is crucial for ensuring successful connections, especially for business communications and personal calls to Tongchuan. Always confirm with your telecom operator if you experience any issues, as network changes may occur.
