Overview of Area Code +86 877
The country calling code +86 is assigned to the People's Republic of China under the ITU-T E.164 international numbering plan. The national destination code (NDC) 877 is a geographic area code that routes calls to the city of Yuxi (玉溪市), located in the central part of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. Yuxi is an important industrial and transportation hub, known for its tobacco industry and the nearby Fuxian Lake, one of China's deepest freshwater lakes.
Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction
The 877 area code serves the entire prefecture-level city of Yuxi, which includes the central urban districts of Hongta and Jiangchuan, as well as the surrounding counties of Chengjiang, Tonghai, Huaning, Yimen, and Eshan. The administrative jurisdiction covers both the city proper and its rural subdivisions, ensuring that all fixed-line telephony within these areas falls under the 877 numbering plan.
Dialing Formats and Procedures
When calling a landline number in Yuxi from within China (including from mobile phones), you must dial the full national number: 0877 followed by the 7-digit local subscriber number. For example, a local number such as 2012345 would be dialed as 0877 2012345 from anywhere in China.
For international callers, the correct format is to dial the international access prefix (typically 00 in most countries, or + from mobile devices), followed by China's country code 86, then the area code 877 (without the leading zero), and finally the 7-digit local number. Thus, the full international dialing format is +86 877 2012345.
Overlay and Numbering Considerations
As of the latest ITU-T and MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) updates, the 877 area code does not have an overlay code; the numbering pool is managed by China Telecom and China Unicom, the primary fixed-line operators in the region. The number length is fixed: 11 digits for the complete national significant number (NSN), which includes the leading 0 for domestic calls and the 7-digit subscriber number. No additional digits are required for local calls within Yuxi, where subscribers can dial the 7-digit number directly.
Caller Instructions
Local callers within Yuxi can dial the 7-digit subscriber number without the area code. Domestic long-distance callers from other Chinese cities must dial 0 before the area code, followed by the subscriber number. International callers should replace the leading 0 with the +86 country code. Always verify the number with the recipient, as mobile numbers in China are not tied to geographic area codes and begin with 1 (e.g., 13x, 15x, 18x).
