Area Code 854 – Duyun, Guizhou

Overview of Area Code 854 (Duyun, Guizhou)

Area code 854 is a geographic telephone code assigned to Duyun, the capital city of the Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province, China. This code is part of the national numbering plan administered under the ITU-T E.164 standard, specifically within the +86 country calling code. Duyun serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the prefecture, and the 854 code covers the urban districts and surrounding counties that fall under its jurisdiction.

Geographic Coverage and Dialing Formats

The 854 area code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within Duyun and its affiliated administrative areas. When dialing locally within the same area code, callers typically use a 7-digit subscriber number without the area code. However, for calls from other regions within China, the full format is 0854 + subscriber number. Internationally, callers must dial +86 854 + subscriber number (or +86 854 followed by the local number, omitting the leading zero used in domestic dialing).

Calling Instructions for Local and Foreign Callers

• Local calls within Duyun: Dial the 7-digit local number directly (no area code).
• Domestic long-distance from other Chinese cities: Dial 0854 followed by the local 7-digit number.
• International calls from abroad: Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries), then 86 (China's country code), then 854, and finally the local 7-digit number. Example: +86 854 1234567.

Administrative and Regulatory Context

China's numbering plan is overseen by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Area codes are allocated based on geographic regions, and 854 is designated for the Duyun area. As of recent years, no overlay codes have been introduced for Duyun, meaning that 854 remains the sole area code for the region. However, with the growth of mobile and VoIP services, fixed-line usage has declined, but the code remains active for businesses, government offices, and residential landlines.

For businesses operating in Duyun or seeking to establish a local presence, obtaining a fixed-line number with the 854 code can enhance local credibility and accessibility. It is important to note that numbers with this code are geographic, meaning they are tied to a specific physical location, which may affect routing and emergency services.

When dialing from abroad, always ensure you have the correct country code (+86) and omit the leading '0' of the domestic area code. For example, a Duyun number written as 0854-1234567 domestically becomes +86 854 1234567 internationally.
