Area Code 852 – Zunyi, Guizhou

Overview of Area Code +86 852

Area code 852 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to Zunyi, a prefecture-level city in the northern part of Guizhou Province, China. Under the ITU-T E.164 international numbering plan, the full international dialing format for a fixed-line number in Zunyi is +86 852 XXXX XXXX (or +86852XXXXXXX when written without spaces). The Chinese national trunk prefix is 0, so domestic callers outside Zunyi must dial 0852 followed by the local 8-digit subscriber number. Within Zunyi, callers can typically omit the area code and dial the 8-digit number directly, though this depends on local dialing procedures.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 852 area code serves the entire administrative region of Zunyi, including its urban districts (Honghuagang, Huichuan, Bozhou) and surrounding counties and county-level cities such as Renhuai, Chishui, and Wuchuan. As a geographic code, it is tied to the PSTN infrastructure of this specific region. The code is not portable outside the Zunyi area; fixed-line numbers retain their geographic association even after a subscriber moves within the city.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

• International callers: Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries, or + from mobile phones), then 86 (China's country code), followed by 852 and the 8-digit local number. Example: +86 852 1234 5678.
• Domestic callers from other Chinese cities: Dial 0 (trunk prefix) + 852 + the 8-digit local number. Example: 0 852 1234 5678.
• Local callers within Zunyi: Dial the 8-digit subscriber number directly (no area code).

There is no overlay code for Zunyi; 852 is the sole NDC for the region. Therefore, no 10-digit or 11-digit dialing is required for local calls. However, as China migrates toward all-IP networks, some VoIP-based calls may require the full national number (0 852 XXXX XXXX) even for local calls, depending on the service provider.

Numbering and Regulatory Notes

Subscriber numbers in Zunyi are 8 digits long, resulting in a total of 11 digits for international format (+86 852 XXXX XXXX). The code is administered by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China, in accordance with the national numbering plan. While mobile numbers in China use separate non-geographic prefixes (e.g., 13x, 15x, 18x), fixed-line numbers under 852 are exclusively for wired PSTN and fixed wireless services. As of recent years, there are no plans to introduce an overlay code or change the length of subscriber numbers in Zunyi.
