Overview of Area Code +86 769
Area code 769 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to Dongguan, a major prefecture-level city in the central-southern part of Guangdong Province, China. Dongguan is a key manufacturing and economic hub in the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangzhou to the north, Shenzhen to the south, and Huizhou to the east. The city is administratively divided into several districts and towns, all of which share the 769 area code.
Geographic Coverage and Dialing Formats
The 769 area code covers the entire administrative region of Dongguan, including urban districts such as Nancheng, Dongcheng, Wanjiang, and Songshan Lake, as well as towns like Chang'an, Houjie, Hummen, and Dalang. When dialing a fixed-line number within Dongguan, the local number is typically 8 digits long, and the full national number is 11 digits (including the trunk prefix 0). For local calls within Dongguan, callers can dial the 8-digit subscriber number directly without the area code. For calls from other cities in China, the format is 0-769-XXXX XXXX. For international callers, the format is +86 769 XXXX XXXX.
Overlay and Numbering Considerations
Dongguan previously used area code 0769 as the trunk prefix. In 2017, China implemented a nationwide numbering plan change that removed the leading '0' from area codes for international dialing, but the domestic trunk prefix '0' remains in use. Therefore, the area code is often referred to as '769' in international context, while domestic callers still dial '0769'. There is no overlay code in Dongguan; the 769 code is the sole geographic code for the city. However, due to the high demand for numbers, the local number length is fixed at 8 digits, and number portability is not generally available for fixed-line services.
