Area Code 739 – Shaoyang, Hunan

Overview of Area Code +86 739

Area code 739 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to Shaoyang (邵阳), a prefecture-level city in the central-western part of Hunan Province, China. Under the ITU-T E.164 international numbering plan, the full international dialing format for landline numbers in this region is +86 739 XXXX XXXX, where the subscriber number typically consists of 8 digits. Domestically, callers within China dial 0739 XXXX XXXX (the leading 0 is the trunk prefix). This code covers the urban districts of Shaoyang (Daxiang, Shuangqing, Beita) and its surrounding counties and county-level cities, including Xinshao, Shaodong, Longhui, Dongkou, Wugang, Xinning, Suining, and Chengbu Miao Autonomous County.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Shaoyang is one of the largest cities in Hunan by land area and population. The 739 numbering plan area is administered by the Hunan Provincial Communications Administration under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The region is served by China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile, all of which operate fixed-line services using the same geographic code. As of the latest numbering plan updates, there are no overlay codes in Shaoyang; the 739 code is the sole geographic area code for the entire prefecture.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For local callers within Shaoyang, dialing a fixed-line number requires the full 8-digit subscriber number without the area code. However, for calls made from mobile phones or from outside the local calling area, the area code must be included: 0739 followed by the 8-digit number. International callers should use +86 739 followed by the subscriber number, omitting the trunk prefix 0. For example, a local fixed-line number in Shaoyang might be 0739 522 1234; from abroad, dial +86 739 522 1234. It is important to note that when dialing from a Chinese mobile phone to a landline in Shaoyang, the area code is mandatory even if the caller is physically within the same city, as mobile numbers do not automatically include the geographic code.

Numbering and Routing Considerations

Fixed-line subscriber numbers in Shaoyang are 8 digits long, following the pattern 739 XXXX XXXX in international format. The first few digits of the subscriber number may indicate the specific central office or exchange, but this information is not publicly disclosed for security reasons. Calls to Shaoyang from other provinces in China are charged at domestic long-distance rates, while international calls are billed according to the caller's carrier. VoIP and internet-based calling services may route to these numbers using standard E.164 protocols, but users should verify that their service provider supports termination to Chinese geographic numbers.
