Area Code 668 – Maoming, Guangdong

Overview of Area Code +86 668

Country calling code +86 is assigned to the People's Republic of China under the ITU-T E.164 international numbering plan. The national destination code (NDC) 668 is a geographic area code that routes calls to the city of Maoming (茂名) in the southwestern part of Guangdong Province. Maoming is a prefecture-level city with direct jurisdiction over several districts and county-level cities, including Maonan District, Dianbai District, Gaozhou, Huazhou, and Xinyi. The area code serves both the urban core and the surrounding administrative regions, making it essential for all fixed-line (PSTN) and some VoIP-based local numbers within that jurisdiction.

Dialing Formats

When calling a Maoming fixed-line number from within China (excluding the local area), you must dial the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and the subscriber number. For example, if the local subscriber number is 1234567, you would dial 0668 1234567 from most parts of China. From within Maoming itself, local calls can be made using only the 7-digit subscriber number, without the area code or trunk prefix.

For international callers, the format is +86 668 1234567 (or 011 86 668 1234567 when dialing from North America). The leading 0 used domestically is always omitted in international dialing. Mobile numbers in China are not assigned geographic area codes; they begin with 1 and are 11 digits long. Therefore, area code 668 applies exclusively to fixed-line services.

Geographic and Administrative Context

Maoming is an important petrochemical and agricultural hub in Guangdong, with a population exceeding 6 million. The area code 668 covers all local exchanges within the prefecture, including the coastal districts and inland towns. Overlay codes are not currently in use for Maoming; the 668 code is the sole geographic NDC for the region. However, as with all Chinese area codes, the number of digits for subscriber numbers is standardized at 7 or 8, depending on the specific exchange and service provider.

Caller Instructions

Local callers within Maoming: Dial the 7-digit subscriber number directly. Domestic callers from other cities in China: Dial 0668 followed by the subscriber number. International callers: Dial your country's exit code, then 86, then 668, then the subscriber number. Remember to drop the trunk prefix 0 when calling from abroad. For example, a call from the United States to a Maoming number would be: 011 86 668 1234567.

Always verify the number length before dialing, as some newer VoIP services may use 8-digit subscriber numbers. If you encounter difficulties, contact your telecom provider for assistance with international dialing.
