Area Code 517 – Huaian, Jiangsu

Geographic Overview

The +86 517 country and area code combination is assigned to the city of Huaian (also written as Huai'an), a prefecture-level city located in the central-eastern part of Jiangsu Province, China. Huaian is a significant transportation hub and historical city, situated on the Grand Canal and the Huai River. The area code covers the entire administrative jurisdiction of Huaian, including its urban districts and surrounding counties. As of the latest administrative divisions, Huaian governs four districts: Qingjiangpu, Huai'an, Huaiyin, and Hongze, as well as three counties: Lianshui, Xuyi, and Jinhu. All landline numbers within this region share the 517 prefix.

Dialing Format

When calling a fixed-line number in Huaian from within China, the standard national trunk prefix '0' is used, followed by the area code and the subscriber number. The complete national format is: 0 517 XXXX XXXX. The subscriber number is eight digits long, making the total length of a local call (excluding the trunk prefix) 12 digits. For international callers, the format is: +86 517 XXXX XXXX. The leading '0' is omitted when dialing from abroad, and the plus sign represents the international access code of the originating country.

Local and International Calling Instructions

• Local calls within Huaian: When dialing from one landline to another within the same area code, the area code and trunk prefix are typically not required. Simply dial the 8-digit subscriber number. However, some mobile or VoIP users may need to include the area code depending on their service provider's configuration.
• Domestic long-distance calls: To call a Huaian number from another city in China, dial 0 517 XXXX XXXX.
• International calls: From outside China, dial your country's international exit code, then 86 517 XXXX XXXX. For example, from the United States, you would dial 011 86 517 XXXX XXXX.

Numbering and Overlay Considerations

Huaian's numbering plan follows the standard Chinese fixed-line structure, with a distinct area code that is not shared with other cities. There are currently no overlay codes or plans for an additional area code in Huaian. The 8-digit subscriber numbers are allocated to various local exchange carriers, including China Telecom and China Unicom, which are the primary providers of PSTN and VoIP fixed-line services in the region. Mobile phone numbers in Huaian, as in the rest of China, are not tied to this geographic area code; they use separate non-geographic prefixes such as 13x, 15x, 18x, etc., and are dialed with the 11-digit mobile number preceded by +86.

For businesses and individuals, it is essential to use the correct format to ensure successful call routing. Misuse of the area code, such as omitting the trunk prefix '0' for domestic calls, may result in failed connections or additional charges. Always verify the subscriber number length and the area code before dialing.
