Overview of Area Code 3166 in Bulgaria

Area code 3166 is a geographic destination code within the Bulgarian national numbering plan, allocated to the region of Byala reka, located in the Plovdiv Province of south-central Bulgaria. This code is part of the country's open dialing plan, where the trunk prefix 0 is used for domestic calls, and the international prefix +359 is used for calls from abroad.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 3166 area code serves the village of Byala reka and its immediate surroundings. Byala reka is situated in the western part of the Plovdiv Province, within the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Parvomay. The region is characterized by a mix of agricultural land and small settlements, with the nearest major urban center being Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria. The area code is assigned to fixed-line services, including PSTN and VoIP, and is managed by the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) of Bulgaria.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For domestic callers within Bulgaria, dialing a number in the 3166 area requires the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and the subscriber number. For example, to call a fixed line in Byala reka, you would dial: 0 3166 XXX XXX. The subscriber number typically consists of 6 to 7 digits, making the total national significant number (NSN) length 9 or 10 digits (including the leading 0).

For international callers, the trunk prefix is replaced by the country code +359. Thus, the same number would be dialed as: +359 3166 XXX XXX. It is important to omit the leading 0 when dialing from abroad.

Overlay Considerations and Numbering Plan

Currently, there is no overlay code for the 3166 area. The numbering plan in Bulgaria is closed, meaning that the length of the national significant number is fixed. However, as of 2023, Bulgaria has been transitioning to a fully closed dialing plan, requiring the use of the trunk prefix for all domestic calls, even within the same area code. This change was implemented to accommodate the growing demand for numbers and to simplify routing.

Practical Usage and Tips

When calling a business or resident in Byala reka, always verify the correct number of digits.
