Area Code 12 – Tongeren

Overview of Area Code +32 12

The Belgian telephone numbering plan, administered by the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT), assigns geographic area code 12 to the region of Tongeren, a city and municipality located in the province of Limburg, in the Flemish Region of Belgium. This code is part of the national destination code (NDC) structure defined under ITU-T E.164, and it is used for fixed-line (PSTN) and fixed-wireless services within the designated geographic area.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Area code 12 covers not only the city of Tongeren itself but also several surrounding municipalities and towns within the arrondissement of Tongeren. These include, among others, Bilzen, Hoeselt, Kortessem, Riemst, and Voeren (the latter being a Dutch-speaking exclave bordering the Netherlands). The area is part of the province of Limburg, which is situated in the northeastern part of Belgium. Tongeren is known as the oldest city in Belgium, with a rich Roman heritage, and serves as an important administrative and commercial center for the region.

Dialing Formats and Usage

When calling a fixed-line number within the Tongeren area, the national dialing format is 012 xx xx xx (or 012 xxx xxx depending on the subscriber number length). The leading '0' is the trunk prefix used for domestic calls within Belgium. For international callers, the country code +32 is used, and the trunk prefix '0' is omitted. Thus, an international call to a Tongeren number would be dialed as +32 12 xx xx xx.

For example, to call a local Tongeren number (e.g., 12 34 56 78) from within Belgium, you would dial 012 34 56 78. From abroad, you would dial +32 12 34 56 78.

It is important to note that Belgium has implemented number portability, allowing subscribers to retain their numbers when switching providers, but geographic numbers are generally tied to the geographic location of the exchange. Overlay codes are not currently in use for this area; the 12 code is the sole geographic code for Tongeren.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers (within Belgium): Always include the trunk prefix '0' when dialing a number in the 12 area from outside that area. For calls within the same area, the full national number (including the area code) is still required, as local dialing without the area code is not permitted in Belgium.
• International callers: Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries, or + from mobile phones), followed by Belgium's country code 32, then the area code 12 (without the leading '0'), and the subscriber number.

This structure ensures reliable routing and billing for both domestic and international calls to the Tongeren region.
