Area Code 479 – Stepanakert

Overview of Area Code 479 (Stepanakert, Armenia)

Area code 479 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Stepanakert, the capital of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). In the context of the Armenian numbering plan, this code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within the Stepanakert administrative district. It is important to note that, due to the region's complex geopolitical status, international dialing to this area may be subject to routing variations depending on the service provider and the caller's location.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 479 area code covers the urban area of Stepanakert and its immediate surroundings. Stepanakert serves as the political, economic, and cultural hub of the region. The code is allocated for geographic numbers, meaning that the tariff and routing are based on the physical location of the subscriber's line. Local calls within Stepanakert are dialed using the subscriber number only (typically 5 to 6 digits). For calls from other parts of Armenia (excluding Artsakh), the trunk prefix '0' is used, followed by the area code and the subscriber number: 0 479 XXX XXX.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

To call a Stepanakert number from within Armenia, dial: 0 479 XXX XXX. For example, if the subscriber number is 123456, you would dial 0 479 123456. If you are calling from within the Stepanakert area itself, you may be able to dial just the local subscriber number, but it is always safe to use the full national format. For international callers, the country code for Armenia is +374. Therefore, to reach a Stepanakert number from abroad, dial: +374 479 XXX XXX. For instance, +374 479 123456. Note that the leading '0' is omitted when dialing from outside Armenia.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T recommendations, there is no overlay code for Stepanakert; the 479 code remains the sole geographic NDC for the city. However, due to the ongoing changes in the region, some numbers may have been migrated or reassigned. It is advisable to verify the current status of a specific number through official Armenian telecom authorities or your service provider. The number length for geographic numbers in Armenia is 8 digits (including the NDC), but Stepanakert numbers may vary slightly. Always confirm the exact number of digits with the recipient.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within Armenia: If you are calling from a mobile phone, you can typically dial the number in international format (+374 479 XXX XXX) even when calling domestically, as this ensures proper routing. For landline callers, use the national format with the trunk prefix '0'. For foreign callers: Ensure you have international dialing access, then dial your country's exit code (e.g., 011 from the US, 00 from most European countries), followed by Armenia's country code 374, then the area code 479 without the leading '0', and finally the subscriber number. Always check with your telecom provider for any specific international dialing restrictions or special tariffs to this region.
