Area Code 471 – Stepanakert

Overview of Area Code 471 (Stepanakert, Armenia)

Area code 471 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Stepanakert (also known as Khankendi), the administrative center of the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In the context of Armenia's national numbering plan, this code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within the city and its immediate surroundings. The region is served by Armenia's public switched telephone network, and calls to this code are routed through the national telecom infrastructure.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

The 471 area code covers the urban area of Stepanakert and nearby settlements. Administratively, the region has been a point of geopolitical contention, but from a telecommunications perspective, it is integrated into Armenia's numbering plan. The code is allocated for geographic services, meaning the number is tied to a physical location, and tariffs are typically based on the distance from the caller's location.

Dialing Formats

To call a fixed-line number in Stepanakert, the following formats apply:

• National dialing (within Armenia): Dial 0 471 XXX XXX. The leading 0 is the trunk prefix used to access the national network. The total number of digits after the trunk prefix is 9 (including the area code).
• International dialing (from outside Armenia): Dial +374 471 XXX XXX. Replace the leading 0 with the country code +374. The plus sign represents the international access prefix (e.g., 00 in most countries).

For example, a local number might be 471 123 456. To call from Yerevan, you would dial 0 471 123 456. To call from the United States, you would dial 011 374 471 123 456 (or +374 471 123 456 from a mobile phone).

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest updates, there is no overlay code for Stepanakert; the 471 code is the sole geographic code for the city. However, due to the region's special status, some mobile operators may use numbers that appear to have a 471 prefix but are actually mobile services. Always verify the number type before dialing, as mobile numbers in Armenia typically start with 77, 91, 93, 94, 98, or 99.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers: If you are within the 471 area, you can often dial the local number without the area code, but it is safer to use the full national format to avoid misdialing.
• Foreign callers: Always use the international format +374 471 XXX XXX. Ensure you have international dialing enabled on your phone plan.

For businesses or individuals in Stepanakert, the 471 code is essential for establishing a local presence. When listing numbers online, always use the international format to facilitate global reach.
