Area Code 2640 – Gavar/Sarukhan, Gegharkunik

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Context

The Armenian national destination code 2640 is a geographic area code assigned to the Gavar and Sarukhan region within the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. Gegharkunik is the largest province by area, situated in the eastern part of the country, and is known for its proximity to Lake Sevan. Gavar serves as the administrative center of the province, while Sarukhan is a nearby urban community. This code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within this specific geographic area, following the ITU-T E.164 numbering plan.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

To call a fixed-line number in Gavar or Sarukhan from within Armenia, subscribers must dial the national trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 2640 and the subscriber's 5-digit local number. The complete national format is: 0 2640 XX XXX (where X represents digits of the local number). For example, if the local number is 12345, the national dialing format would be 0 2640 12345.

For international callers, the Armenian country code +374 replaces the trunk prefix. The international format becomes +374 2640 XX XXX. Using the same example, international callers would dial +374 2640 12345. It is important to note that the leading '0' of the national trunk prefix is omitted when dialing from abroad.

Numbering and Overlay Considerations

Armenian fixed-line numbers typically have a total length of 8 digits (excluding the trunk prefix '0'), comprising the area code and the local subscriber number. In the case of code 2640, the area code is 4 digits, leaving a 5-digit subscriber number, resulting in a 9-digit national significant number (NSN) when including the country code. As of the latest ITU-T operational bulletins, no overlay codes have been introduced for this region, meaning that the 2640 code is exclusively used for fixed-line services in Gavar and Sarukhan. However, subscribers should verify with their service provider for any future numbering changes.

Caller Guidance

• Local callers within Gavar/Sarukhan may still need to dial the full national format (0 2640 XX XXX) depending on the operator's dialing plan; it is recommended to always use the full format for reliability.
• National callers from other Armenian regions must dial 0 2640 XX XXX.
• International callers should dial +374 2640 XX XXX from any country, ensuring they replace the '+' with their international exit code (e.g., 011 from the US, 00 from most European countries).

This geographic code ensures efficient routing of calls to the Gavar and Sarukhan area, supporting both residential and business telecommunications needs in the region.
