Overview of Area Code +374 2224

Area code 2224 is a geographic destination code within the Armenian national numbering plan, assigned to the city of Abovyan and its immediate surroundings in the Kotayk Province of Armenia. Abovyan, located approximately 16 kilometers northeast of the capital Yerevan, is a significant urban center in the province, and this code serves its fixed-line telephone subscribers.

Under the ITU-T E.164 international standard, the full international dialing format for a subscriber number in this area is +374 2224 XXXX, where +374 is the country calling code for Armenia, 2224 is the national destination code (NDC) for Abovyan, and the remaining digits constitute the local subscriber number. In the national context, the number is written as 0 2224 XXXX, where the leading 0 is the trunk prefix used for domestic long-distance calls within Armenia.

Dialing Procedures

For callers within Armenia, dialing a fixed-line number in Abovyan requires the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and subscriber number: 0 2224 XXXX. For international callers, the procedure is to dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 in most countries) followed by Armenia's country code 374, then the area code 2224 without the leading trunk prefix, and finally the subscriber number: +374 2224 XXXX.

It is important to note that Armenia uses a closed numbering plan for fixed-line services, meaning that the area code must always be dialed, even for local calls within the same area. Therefore, a local call from one Abovyan subscriber to another still requires the full national number: 0 2224 XXXX.

Geographic Coverage and Administration

The 2224 area code is administered by the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia and is allocated to the Kotayk Province. Abovyan serves as the administrative center of the province and is one of the key satellite cities of Yerevan. The code covers the urban area of Abovyan and may extend to nearby settlements within the same telephone exchange zone. As of the latest numbering plan updates, no overlay codes have been assigned to this area, so 2224 remains the sole geographic code for fixed-line services in Abovyan.

For businesses and residents, using the correct international format is crucial for receiving calls from abroad. It is advisable to list numbers as +374 2224 XXXX on websites and international directories to ensure proper routing.
