Area Code 2222 – Abovyan, Kotayk

Overview of Area Code 2222

Area code 2222 is a geographic numbering plan area within the Armenian national dialing plan, assigned to the city of Abovyan and its surrounding areas in the Kotayk Province. Abovyan is a significant urban center located approximately 16 kilometers northeast of the capital, Yerevan, and serves as an important satellite city with a mix of residential, industrial, and commercial activity. The code is administered under the framework of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) E.164 recommendation, which defines the international public telecommunication numbering plan.

Geographic Coverage and Administration

The 2222 area code covers the administrative territory of Abovyan, including its municipal boundaries and adjacent rural communities within the Kotayk region. Kotayk Province is one of Armenia's ten provinces (marzes) and is known for its proximity to Yerevan, as well as its historical and cultural landmarks. The numbering area is served by fixed-line operators licensed by the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia, and the code is allocated for geographic PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) services.

Dialing Formats

To call a landline number in Abovyan, callers must use the appropriate national or international format, depending on their location.

• National (domestic) dialing: When calling from within Armenia, subscribers must dial the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and the subscriber number. The national significant number (NSN) for Abovyan is eight digits long, comprising the area code 2222 and a four-digit subscriber number. For example, if the subscriber number is 1234, the national dialing format would be: 0 2222 1234.
• International dialing: Callers from outside Armenia need to dial the international access prefix (typically 00 or +), followed by Armenia's country calling code 374, then the area code without the leading trunk prefix, and the subscriber number. Using the same example, the international format would be: +374 2222 1234.

It is important to note that the trunk prefix 0 is used only for domestic calls and must be omitted when dialing from abroad. The area code 2222 is part of the closed numbering plan of Armenia, which means that the full national significant number must always be dialed, even for local calls within the same area code.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the current numbering plan, there is no overlay code for the Abovyan area, and the 2222 code is unique to this geographic region. However, with the ongoing development of telecommunications infrastructure, the regulatory authority may introduce additional area codes or number expansion measures in the future. Subscribers in Abovyan can also retain their numbers when switching between fixed-line operators, subject to number portability regulations.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within Abovyan, it is still required to dial the full national format (including the area code) because Armenia uses a closed dialing plan. For international callers, it is essential to replace the leading 0 with the +374 country code. Always verify the subscriber number length, as it is fixed at four digits after the area code.
