Area Code 3883 – San Salvador de Jujuy, Jujuy

Overview of Area Code 3883

Area code 3883 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital of the Jujuy Province in northwestern Argentina. This code is part of the national numbering plan under country code +54, following the ITU-T E.164 standard. It serves the metropolitan area of San Salvador de Jujuy and its immediate surroundings, including localities such as Palpalá, Alto Comedero, and Yala, which are integrated into the same local calling area.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 3883 NDC covers the central and eastern part of Jujuy Province. As a geographic code, it is tied to the physical location of the telephone line, and calls are routed based on the destination's geographic area. The region is administered by the municipality of San Salvador de Jujuy, and the code is allocated to fixed-line services, although some VoIP providers may also assign numbers with this code to users who reside in the area.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For local callers within the 3883 area, the number is dialed as a 7-digit subscriber number (e.g., 422-1234). For callers from other parts of Argentina, the full national format is used: 0 3883 422-1234. The leading '0' is the national trunk prefix, and '3883' is the area code. For international callers, the format is +54 3883 422-1234, where the '+' is the international access prefix (replacing the '00' used in many countries). Note that when dialing from a mobile phone in Argentina, the '0' is often omitted, but the area code is still required: 3883 422-1234.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for San Salvador de Jujuy; 3883 is the sole area code for the region. However, as with all Argentine geographic codes, the national telecom regulator (ENACOM) has implemented number portability, allowing users to keep their 3883 number when changing service providers. Additionally, due to the growth of mobile and VoIP services, some 3883 numbers may be assigned to non-geographic services, but the code remains officially geographic.

Practical Usage

When calling a business or resident in San Salvador de Jujuy, always verify the correct number of digits. Fixed-line subscriber numbers in this area are 7 digits long, and the total national number (including trunk prefix and area code) is 10 digits (excluding the initial '0'). For international callers, the total number of digits after the country code is 10 (area code + subscriber number). This consistency helps avoid dialing errors.
