Overview of Area Code +54 3867

Area code 3867 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Argentine national numbering plan, assigned to the western region of Tucumán Province. It serves the scenic valley town of Tafí del Valle and its surrounding rural communities, nestled in the Calchaquíes mountain range. This zone is a popular tourist destination, known for its dramatic landscapes, traditional Andean culture, and archaeological sites.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

The code covers the Departamento Tafí del Valle, which includes the municipal seat of Tafí del Valle, as well as smaller settlements such as El Mollar, La Angostura, and the surrounding high-altitude valleys. Administratively, this area falls under the province of Tucumán, with local governance handled by the municipality. The region is primarily rural, with economic activities centered on tourism, agriculture (especially highland crops), and artisanal crafts.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

For callers within Argentina, dialing a local number in Tafí del Valle requires the national trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 3867, and then the subscriber's 6-digit local number. The complete national format is: 0 3867 XXX XXX.

For international callers, the country code for Argentina is +54. Therefore, to reach a fixed line in Tafí del Valle from abroad, you must dial: +54 3867 XXX XXX. Note that the leading '0' of the national trunk prefix is omitted when dialing from outside the country.

When placing a call from another Argentine province, you may need to include the area code even if dialing a local number, depending on your carrier's requirements. In many cases, the full national format (0 + area code + number) is used for all long-distance calls.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T E.164 records, there is no overlay code for this region; 3867 remains the sole area code for the Tafí del Valle exchange. Subscriber numbers are 6 digits long, and the total length of a national significant number (NSN) is 10 digits (area code + subscriber number). The Argentine regulator, ENACOM, manages the numbering plan, and all geographic numbers are portable within the same area code, allowing users to change service providers while retaining their number.

Practical Tips for Callers

If you are traveling to Tafí del Valle and wish to make local calls, you can typically dial the 6-digit subscriber number directly from a landline within the same area code. However, from mobile phones, it is common practice to dial the full national number (0 3867 XXX XXX) to ensure proper routing. For international visitors, using the +54 prefix is essential. Always confirm the correct number with your contact, as local numbers may be listed with or without the area code.
