Area Code 3838 – Santa María, Catamarca

Overview of Area Code 3838

Area code 3838 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Santa María and its surrounding areas in the Catamarca Province of Argentina. This code is part of the national numbering plan under the country calling code +54, following the ITU-T E.164 standard. The region is situated in the Calchaquí Valleys, a significant cultural and tourist area in northwestern Argentina.

Geographic Coverage and Administration

The 3838 area code serves the administrative jurisdiction of the Department of Santa María, which includes the city of Santa María (the departmental capital) and smaller localities such as San José, El Cajón, and La Puntilla. The code is managed by the Ente Nacional de Comunicaciones (ENACOM), Argentina's national telecommunications regulatory body. The region is known for its winemaking, traditional crafts, and archaeological sites, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

For callers within Argentina, dialing a fixed-line number in Santa María requires the format 0-3838-XXXXXX, where 0 is the national trunk prefix, 3838 is the area code, and XXXXXX is the six-digit subscriber number. For example, to call a local number such as 456789 from another Argentine city, you would dial 0 3838 456789.

For international callers, the format is +54 3838 XXXXXX. For instance, calling the same number from abroad would require dialing +54 3838 456789. It is important to note that the leading 0 is not used when dialing from outside Argentina; instead, the country code +54 is used.

Local Dialing and Overlay Considerations

Within the Santa María area, local calls between fixed-line subscribers in the same area code may be dialed using only the six-digit subscriber number, depending on the specific local dialing rules. However, with the evolution of telephony services, ENACOM has implemented unified dialing formats to ensure consistency. As of the current numbering plan, there are no overlay codes in this region, meaning 3838 is the sole area code for the area. Callers should always verify the exact dialing procedure with their service provider, especially when using VoIP or mobile networks.

Caller Instructions and Practical Tips

When calling Santa María from a mobile phone in Argentina, it is common to include the area code even for local calls, as mobile numbers are non-geographic and require the full national number. For foreign callers, it is essential to check with your telecom provider regarding international dialing rates and any additional prefixes required in your country. Always use the +54 country code followed by the area code and subscriber number, omitting any leading zero.
