Overview of Area Code 3487

Area code 3487 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Zárate and its surrounding localities in the northeastern part of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. This region is part of the Pampas, situated along the Paraná River, approximately 90 km northwest of Buenos Aires city. The code covers the urban area of Zárate and nearby towns such as Lima, Escalada, and Alsina, serving both residential and business lines connected to the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) as well as fixed wireless and VoIP services.

Dialing Formats

When calling a fixed line in Zárate from within Argentina, the national trunk prefix 0 is used, followed by the area code and the subscriber number. The complete national format is:

• 0-3487-XXXXXXX (where X represents the 7-digit local subscriber number)

For international callers, the Argentine country code +54 is used, and the leading 0 of the national prefix is omitted. The international format is:

• +54-3487-XXXXXXX

For example, to call a fixed line in Zárate with the subscriber number 4251234:

• From within Argentina: 0-3487-4251234
• From abroad: +54-3487-4251234

Geographic and Administrative Context

Zárate is the head city of the Zárate Partido (county) and serves as an important industrial and logistics hub, with major paper, steel, and petrochemical plants. The area code 3487 is exclusively used for fixed-line services in this zone. It is distinct from mobile numbers, which in Argentina are non-geographic and typically begin with 15 after the area code when dialed nationally, or with 9 after the country code when dialed internationally. For instance, a mobile in Zárate would be reached via +54 9 3487 XX-XXXX.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for 3487; the area code is unique to this region. However, as with all Argentine fixed-line codes, the number of digits is fixed at 7 for the subscriber number, and the total length of a national significant number (NSN) is 10 digits (including the area code but excluding the trunk prefix). The regulatory authority, ENACOM, oversees number allocation and has implemented number portability for fixed lines, allowing users to retain their numbers when changing operators within the same geographic area.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within the 3487 area, dialing the 7-digit subscriber number directly is sufficient. For callers from other Argentine cities, the full national format (0-3487-XXXXXXX) is required. International callers must use the +54 country code and drop the leading 0. It is important to note that calls to 3487 from abroad are charged as international calls, and rates vary by carrier.
