Area Code 812 – Ersekë, Kolonjë

Overview of Area Code 812 (Ersekë, Kolonjë)

Area code 812 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Albanian public switched telephone network (PSTN), assigned to the municipality of Ersekë and the wider administrative district of Kolonjë, located in the southeastern part of the country. This region falls under the prefecture of Korçë and borders Greece to the south. The code is used for fixed-line services provided by local operators, primarily the incumbent provider Albtelecom.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 812 area code serves the town of Ersekë, which is the administrative center of the Kolonjë District, as well as the surrounding villages and rural communities within the municipal boundaries. The region is known for its mountainous terrain and historical significance, but it remains a relatively low-density area. Subscribers within this code are geographically tied to the Kolonjë region, and the code is not portable outside this specific area.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

Understanding the correct dialing procedure is essential for both domestic and international callers.

• Domestic calls (within Albania): When calling a fixed-line number in Ersekë from another Albanian city, you must include the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and the subscriber number. The national significant number (NSN) is 8 digits long, comprising the area code (812) and a 5-digit local subscriber number. For example, if the local number is 45 678, you would dial: 0 812 45 678.
• International calls (from abroad): To reach a number in Ersekë from outside Albania, you need to use the international access prefix of your country (typically 00 or +), followed by Albania's country code +355, then the area code without the leading trunk prefix, and the subscriber number. For the same local number, you would dial: +355 812 45 678.

Overlay Considerations and Numbering Plan

As of the current Albanian numbering plan, there is no overlay code for the Kolonjë region. The 812 code is the sole geographic code for Ersekë, and all fixed-line numbers in this area are allocated under this code. The subscriber number length is consistently 5 digits, resulting in a total of 8 digits for the national significant number when combined with the area code. This structure aligns with the ITU-T E.164 recommendation for Albania.

For callers within the same area code, it is possible to dial only the 5-digit subscriber number in some local exchanges, but it is always safer to use the full national format to avoid confusion, especially when calling from mobile networks. Mobile and VoIP users should always include the area code when dialing fixed-line numbers in Ersekë.

In summary, area code 812 is a straightforward geographic code serving a specific administrative region. Whether you are a resident, a business, or a tourist trying to reach a local service, following the correct dialing format ensures successful connection.
