Area Code 284 – Rubik, Mirditë

Overview of Area Code +355 284

Area code 284 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Albanian public switched telephone network (PSTN), assigned under the national numbering plan administered by the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP). It serves the municipality of Rubik and the broader Mirditë region, located in the northern part of the country. This area code is used for fixed-line services, connecting subscribers to the public telephone network via local exchanges.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The +355 284 code covers the administrative territory of the Mirditë municipality, which includes the town of Rubik and its surrounding villages. Mirditë is part of the Lezhë County, and the region is known for its mountainous terrain and historical copper mining industry. The code is specifically allocated to the fixed network infrastructure in this area, distinguishing it from the mobile and special service codes used elsewhere in Albania.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

To call a fixed-line number in Rubik or Mirditë from within Albania, you must dial the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and the subscriber number. The national format is: 0 284 XXX XXX (where X represents the local subscriber digits). For example, a local number might be dialed as 0284 123 456.

For international callers, the country code for Albania is +355. Therefore, you should dial +355 284 XXX XXX (omitting the leading zero of the national trunk prefix). For instance, an international caller would dial +355 284 123 456 to reach the same subscriber.

When calling from abroad, ensure you use the correct international exit code for your country (e.g., 00 from most European countries, 011 from the United States and Canada) before dialing the country code and area code.

Numbering Plan and Overlay Considerations

Albania's fixed-line numbers are typically 7 to 8 digits long when including the area code. The subscriber number length within the 284 area code may vary, but the total length of the national significant number (NSN) is 8 digits (excluding the trunk prefix 0). As of the latest AKEP guidelines, there are no overlay codes for this region; the 284 code remains the sole geographic code for the Mirditë area.

Fixed-line numbers in Albania are generally not portable to other geographic regions, but they can be ported to VoIP providers that offer fixed-line services, subject to regulatory rules. However, the geographic significance of the code is retained for emergency services and location identification.

Practical Usage and Recommendations

For businesses operating in Rubik or Mirditë, having a local fixed-line number with the 284 code establishes a local presence and can be more cost-effective for local customers. For callers, it is important to note that calls to this area code from mobile phones within Albania are charged at national rates, which may vary depending on your mobile operator. International callers should check with their service provider for applicable international tariffs.

When storing or sharing numbers, always use the international format (+355 284 XXX XXX) to ensure clarity for both domestic and international contacts.
